My late father lived the last 18 years of his life alone and had, as many in this situation do, a dog, Sally, as his companion. He lived in a flat (apartment) in south London and was visited most days by his sister, 'Dolly'.

Sally was a Dalmation bitch and was the only thing my father really cared about. He once became concerned about Sally's health ---

SALLY's SPOT

On Sunday last in the flat with Dolly, whilst stroking Sally's hair,
He felt a bump, stopped talking then, looked down, began to stare,
Behind her ear a blister there, all soft and red and round,
Bloody hell he said aloud, what's this I've gone and found.

I don't like this he said to Doll, it's off to the vet's for me,
We'll get this sorted, won't we Sal, but he's bound to charge a fee,
A single phone call, that's all it took, to get her to the vet,
He'll sort her out, he knew he would, for him a certain bet.

So early risers both were they, he put Sal in the car,
Don't worry Sal it won't be long, the journeys not that far,
When he arrived the vet he said "Just go, leave her with me"
Come back at four to pick her up, bring cash to pay the fee.

So home he drove and went indoors, oh what a sorry face,
he didn't think or he'd go nuts, so he thought he'd clean the place,
He sorted here and polished there and even dusted that,
Before too long he had himself one really gleaming flat.

It was just then the phone rang loud, he wasn't used to that you see,
In fact it rang with such a force, he said "it scared the s*** from me",
He reached the phone, composed himself and answered with a puff,
It was the vet, he said to Dad, " I've found some other stuff".

Dad told him then to go ahead, he must have sounded tense,
Of course he thought of poor old Sal, not the bill, well stuff expense,
He picked her up at four o'clock and bought her home, right here,
Poor old sod, she looked a state with a sponge nailed to her ear.

He'd clipped her claws and cleaned her teeth and polished them so bright,
With one tooth pulled and ears cleaned out she really looked a sight,
The big old blister was all but gone, cut out with wart and all,
In a couple of weeks she'll be right as rain and then to have a ball,
When dogs have problems, some owner's say "This hound I'll probably ditch",
But Dad's old Sal meant a lot to him, co's she was his, the soppy bitch!!!
